Welcome to Jan Averkin!
We are happy to announce that Jan Averkin has recently joined the ETH Development Economics Group (DEC) as a PhD student.
Jan Averkin joined the ETH Development Economics Group (DEC) in September 2024. Using Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) and secondary data sources, such as satellite imagery, he explores the complex interactions between local economies and the environment. His research aims to identify how targeted policies can foster inclusive growth and improve socio-economic outcomes along global value chains.
Prior to starting his PhD, Jan worked as a research assistant at the University of St. Gallen, where he was involved in projects on index-based livestock insurance (IBLI) in Kenya and the tracking of global mine activities through machine learning. He previously also worked at the State Secretariat of Economic Affairs (SECO) in Bern and the economic think tank Avenir Suisse in Zurich.
Jan holds an MSc in Economics and Policy from King's College London, and a BA in Business and Economics from the University of Zurich.
