New data sources and AI offer opportunities for global development organisations to work more effectively towards the 2030 Agenda. For example, natural language processing can help project design, and new large-scale datasets can help better target or monitor projects. In addition, generative AI in agriculture could help farmers optimise yields, AI-driven healthcare solutions could help doctors better diagnose diseases in underserved communities, and AI-powered ed-tech could help children learn better. However, despite its positive development potential, the use of AI also raises ethical concerns, including data privacy and algorithmic bias.

This introductory two-day course provides a general overview of the potential and challenges of AI for organisations aiming to contribute to sustainable and equitable development.
It covers the following key topics:

  • History and terminology of AI
  • Natural language processing (NLP) for project-cycle-management (PCM)
  • New data sources for sustainable and equitable development
  • Machine learning for monitoring and targeting of projects
  • AI for and in education and health
  • Data ethics and privacy
  • AI surveillance, AI misinformation and biases of algorithms
