Listen in to the latest episode of “1.90 pro Tag”

Manuela Ernst, head of the Social Integration and Migration Department at the Swiss Red Cross, discusses migration, trauma and working in crisis areas in the latest episode of the NADEL podcast.

Manuela Ernst

Manuela’s work is all about migration. After assignments in refugee camps in East Africa and Iraq, Manuela (ETH NADEL 2012) now works at the Swiss Red Cross. Its outpatient clinic for victims of torture and war in Bern offers medical, psychotherapeutic and psychosocial help to people who have suffered terribly.

In the podcast, we find out why the flight of migrants is often just as traumatic as the events that drive them to flee. We learn about Manuela’s work as a UNHCR protection officer in Iraq and how she managed to set up the local office in the unstable border area between the Kurdish-controlled north and Iraqi-controlled south. And she tells us what 15 years of commitment to people on the run have done to Manuela as a person.

Also on the podcast: Confidential talks under police protection, Angela Merkel's refugee policy and the great effect of a small complaint letterbox.
