Swiss Panel Global Cooperation
Since 2021, ETH NADEL has conducted the Swiss Panel Global Cooperation survey to assess the Swiss public's attitudes and commitments towards development cooperation. The report on the 2023 edition of the survey highlights emerging patterns and trends over the past three years. It examines the Swiss public's concerns about global poverty, their support for development funding and how they believe this spending should be allocated.
Swiss Public's Engagement with Global Poverty
- Despite global conflicts and economic uncertainties, the Swiss public's concern for global poverty remains strong, with a consistent level of concern around 65% over the past three years.
- Awareness that over half of the global population lives on less than $10 a day raises concern levels to 72%.
Preference for Development Cooperation over Military Spending
- When informed about current spending levels for development cooperation, 58% of the Swiss population supports increasing expenditure for development cooperation, and 30% want to keep current spending levels.
- When informed of the current spending levels for military expenditures, 26% support increasing military expenditure, while 40% want to keep current spending levels.
Prioritization of Development Spending
- The Swiss population shows a strong consensus for prioritizing development spending on education (21%), food security (20%), and health (17%) across gender, age, education levels
- Conversely, there is limited support for promoting the local private sector (1.6%) and supporting good governance and democracy (4%) across all socio-economic groups.
- Support for Infrastructure Investment and Climate Change Adaptation is modest with 5.6% and 5.8% of respondents listing them as important, respectively. In addition, support for those topics depends on political leanings: respondents from the political right are more likely to support infrastructure than those who identify themselves with left positions; climate change adaptation gets more support from left-leaning and less from right-leaning respondents
