Benin's dual vocational education system

Dr. Rubain Bankole wrote his dissertation on the dual vocational education system in Benin. He explains to us why the implementation of the system is a success and what further adjustments are still needed in the future.

In 2005, a dual vocational education system was introduced nationwide in Benin. Since then, practice-oriented vocational training has been combined with technical education and apprentices now receive a nationally recognized certificate of graduation at the end of their training.

But how well has the new system been implemented and what outcomes can be observed? Dr. Rubain Bankole addressed these questions in his dissertation entitled "Appropriating of dual vocational education and training in Benin: an empirical analysis in the (in)formal sector". For his project, which is part of the TVET4INCOME research initiative, Dr. Bankole collaborated with Prof. Isabel Günther and Bartlomiej Kudrzycki from ETH NADEL. In October 2021 he then joined ETH Zurich as a visiting scholar.

In an external page interview he told us what insights he gained in his work, what challenges the dual vocational education system in Benin still faces, what role international donor agencies have in planning and financing the system, and why, of all things, graduation ceremonies can put young apprentices in trouble.
