Since the first “Interdisziplinärer Nachdiplomskurs für Entwicklungsländer INDEL” in 1970, NADEL has trained about 1500 change-makers for international development cooperation, many of whom have taken up leadership roles: from governmental institutions, multilateral organizations, NGOs, universities to the private sector.

On the occasion of NADEL’S 50th anniversary this autumn, Isabel Günther and Fritz Brugger explain in an interview why international cooperation is just as important today as it was 50 years ago. In doing so, they do not only address the milestones of NADEL, such as the establishing of one of the first inter- and transdisciplinary degree programmes. The NADEL co-directors also discuss current challenges in development cooperation: The climate crisis, national interests vs. global sustainable development, or the double-edged nature of digitalisation – which not only opens up new opportunities but also risks deepening existing dependencies and increasing inequality. Finally, they reveal their plans for the coming years.
