A warm welcome to Frank Otieno Odhiambo!
We recently welcomed Frank Otieno Odhiambo to the group of doctoral students at the ETH Development Economics Group. Frank is doing his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Isabel Günther on inclusive education in Kenya.
In his PhD at the ETH Development Economics Group, Frank will be looking at the role of technology in addressing education and mental well-being outcomes for learners with disabilities in western Kenya. The project addresses an important question related to inclusive education: It evaluates whether learner content when delivered through a speech-enabled mobile app can be an effective tool to improve educational outcomes and mental well-being for learners with disabilities in low-income countries. It is implemented in Western Kenya and looks mainly at outcomes such as adoption rates, effects on math and science test scores, transition to secondary school and mental wellbeing. “I am most looking forward to gaining new knowledge, refining my research and problem-solving skills and developing new perspectives on issues affecting the world at large”, says Frank. He is one of three E4D Doctoral Fellows 2021.
Frank has experience running randomised evaluations and developing important relationships with government partners for policy change in Africa. Before starting his PhD, Frank worked with several development organizations such as Innovations for Poverty Action in Kenya. As a Research and Policy Manager, he supported both the research and policy departments to ensure that evidence that is generated from impact evaluations is taken up by policymakers.
He holds an MA in Management from the University of Nairobi (Kenya) and a BSc in International Relations and Diplomacy from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (Kenya). He has broad interests in development issues, education, poverty and inequality.
