Open Position: Research Assistant in Development Economics (80%-100%, temporary three months)

The Development Economics Group is a small international team of highly motivated researchers interested by challenges and solutions of global development. We are offering a Research Assistant position (starting February 2020) on a project on artisanal gold mining in Burkina Faso.

Project background
The Researcher Assistant will be part of research project investigating illegal gold mining in Burkina Faso. Although illegal and informal gold mining is commonly practiced, due to data scarcity its scope and impact is poorly understood. As part of this research project, we are attempting to create a novel database of the geolocation of artisanal gold mines in Burkina Faso. This database will allow us to study the impact of illegal mining on the surrounding communities and environment.


Job description
The Research Assistant will analyze satellite images of registered artisanal mines in Burkina Faso.


Your profile
Candidates need to have experience with the statistical software STATA, as well as Google Earth Engine, experience with related software such as ArcGIS will also be considered. Experience in Phyton is an advantage. Candidates need to have a Master’s degree, but advanced candidates with a bachelor’s degree will also be considered.
