Course objective:
Our world is facing an unprecedented cascade of social, economic and environmental crises. International development finance will play a central role in making the sustainable investments needed in the coming decades.
This three-day course explores how the development finance landscape is evolving to face these challenges and what more needs to be done. The focus is on current debates about development finance institutions, actors and techniques and what they mean for practitioners.

Key topics:

  • Defining global investment "needs" and the role of development finance
  • The politics of financing global development and climate targets
  • The evolving role of multilateral banks, including the World Bank
  • The growing importance of China as a global development financier
  • Climate-focused financing platforms such as the Green Climate Fund

Participants:

  • development practitioners needing to understand how their efforts fit into the broader international context
  • civil society stakeholders seeking to influence policy decisions on a national and international level
  • private sector actors aiming to leverage private investment toward development impact.

Please note: The course will have a strong finance component, including discussions of specific financial instruments, investment platforms, and financial performance of DFIs. As such, a solid grounding in finance concepts and practices is highly recommended for all participants.
